How To Cleanup Drives And Remove Duplicate Files For Free

Nowadays the storage is relatively cheap and at the same time huge, but as the applications and the multimedia files grow too by providing more features and higher quality the disk cleanup process is an important topic as always.

Best practice is to always keep an organized structure of files, but in the busy world today that is not always possible. Even the most pedantic individuals will sometimes extract, copy, duplicate or save an edited version of a file in some hidden corner of the hard drive and forget it for years. Such lost space can grow to gigabytes and worst of all will slow the overall performance of the computer due to the growing number of files. Those of course will affect the speed of antivirus applications, backup applications, files search and all other tools that scan the file system. So what are the options to restore such system?

Identify Space Hogs – Remove Unused Large Files

Easy to say, but not easy to accomplish without the help of a professional tools. Folder Size Freeware is an advanced tool that can scan a system and list all files and folders sorted by size. There are neat charts that represent the distribution of disk space using pie or bar charts which can also be used for navigation.

This handy little tool is extremely fast and can scan a 128 GB SSD drive in just five seconds. A quick look at the results revels the largest files and folders in the system and one can free gigabytes of disk space by just removing several video files or old backups that are stored in a hidden locations.

Besides listing the files and folders with all their properties and providing multiple sort options, Folder Size generates a bunch of handy reports. One of the best to spot wasted disk space is the “Largest files and folders” report. What it does is to list the top 50 largest files and folders inside the currently selected folder and all its sub-folders. This list is also available as separate “Largest files” and “Largest folders” reports.

Remove Redundant Data – Delete Duplicate Files

Fast Duplicate File Finder is a professional tool that can identify similar and duplicate files. While this is an advanced commercial application it provides a FREE version that provides more than sufficient features for a good disk cleanup. Those include the “100% Identical Files” and “Similar File Names” modes while the “Similar Files” mode is present only in the PRO version. The tool performs a real file comparison and can identify duplicate files on a local computer or network even if they are stored with different file names.

The “Similar File Names” mode is extremely handy in identifying “Copy of CV.doc”, “CV 2013.docx”, “CV 2014.doc” types of similar file names. Using the tool is extremely simple. The locations to be scanned should be added to the “Folders List” then a search method should be selected and hitting the “Scan” button will reveal the duplicates in minutes. The results are listed in a neat grid with all their properties and all the duplicates are  grouped by similarity. There is a neat preview windows for most common file formats that can be used in order to compare the files visually before deciding whether to keep or delete a copy. There are options to select files automatically by date, location, size, and so on. The duplicate files can be moved to a backup location, deleted to recycle bin or permanently erased.

Audio Dedupe Review – Find Similar Songs, Organize Audio Collection, Manage Music Files

Find Similar Audio

Find Similar Songs

Audio Dedupe can find similar and duplicate songs regardless of the file format

Having a large music collection inevitably leads to duplicates too. Finding duplicate files by going through your entire music library and listening to every song is impractical and time consuming. The better choice is to use a dedicate software tool to do the hard work. Standard Duplicate file finders will not help in this situation as the only thing they can do is to find exact duplicates which rarely is the case. For cleaning up your music library and reclaiming lost hard disk space best thing to do is to use a dedicated Audio Duplicate File Finder. The following application has been specifically selected to help you in tidying up your digital music collection.

Audio Dedupe is an innovative tool that does not rely on file size, name or ID3 tags in order to identify similar or duplicate songs. It “listens” to the songs in order to find similarities in a way that a human would do. It is much more effective than a standard duplicate file finder as most duplicate files are stored in different file formats using different algorithms and a tool like Audio Dedupe is the only solution in this situation as the actual binary data of the duplicate audio files is completely different. The only solution to this problem is the true audio analysis in Audio Dedupe that can identify the similar files.

Benefits

    • Organize songs in music libraries with a precise and easy to use tool.
    • Organize iPod, Mp3 Players and Flash Disks, iTunes, iPad, iPhone and other devices
    • Save valuable disk space by removing duplicate songs
    • Reduce backup disk space and time.
    • Reduce antivirus scan time and file counts.
    • Remove duplicate files to eliminate synchronization problems.

  • Scan  folders/drives, computers, network folders or shares

  • Find duplicates from in a selected set of folders or exclude certain folders from the scan
  • Save project files in order to review them at a later time.
  • Exported to XML and CSV (EXCEL) file formats.

Duplicate Mp3 Finder, is a permanent solution for organizing audio collections. This is not a basic CRC32 Checksum or Byte-by-Byte comparison tool – this is a TRUE AUDIO ANALYSIS award winning professional solution. Checksum comparison involves reading the file from the beginning to the end and generating a unique number calculated based on its content and can not help in finding similar files. Unlike common duplicate file finders Audio Dedupe listens to the songs in order to find similarities.

Folder Size Windows 7 – Resolved

GemTech Articles
Windows 7 Folder Size

Windows 7 Folder Size

Recently I came across some posts on forums from people complaining that there is no Folder Size column in Windows 7. While this is true there is a pretty good reason for it.

First of all none of the files systems support such option by design, which means that it is not available to the operating system. Why is that? Imagine for a moment how this should work at all and the reasons will be quite clear. If folder size information is updated it means that on every file operation the system must update this information. While this may not be a heavy operation if you save or delete a few files just think if you copy or move millions of files? Such operation will take ages. On the other hand you have at least 500 files open in your operating system at any given time (including ones used by the operating system itself) so all those have to be constantly tracked.

Such tracking will lead to immense system slow-down and if it was really implemented the people from those forums that complain about the folder size column not being implemented would be complaining against it. 😉

What do you personally prefer – a constantly slow system because of a feature that you use rarely or just to look for an alternative to scan your folder sizes under Widows 7?

Folder Size is not available not only in Windows 7, but also in Windows 8, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows NT, Linux, Mac OS or any other operating system because of the performance issues mentioned above.

I hope I have managed to explain this clear enough. I personally like the thinks they are and I use this FREE Folder Size application whenever I need it. It is very lightweight and fast and has a beautiful interface resembling the one of Windows Explorer with plenty of charts. This is my personal favorite in the disk cleanup process.

Windows 7 Duplicate File Finder Explained

Windows 7 Duplicate Finder

Windows 7 Duplicate Finder

There is a lot of information about duplicate finding on the web, but I am going to guide you to the best FREE tools to do that.

Finding duplicates is not an easy task and we have to first choose a duplicate finder tool to do this. There are plenty of tools out there, but most of them either do not work properly or they install some nasty spam stuff on your computer. Even the reputable ones install some tool bars and crap that you can not easily get rid of. This is really annoying as you was supposed to clean up hard disks not install extra stuff.

So the Windows 7 Duplicate Finder that I finally found is named Fast Duplicate File Finder and works like a charm:

The tools is very fast and finds all the duplicates properly. Some of the other tools that I tested missed duplicates or displayed incorrect results. Make sure to run this in 100% mode for duplicate detection as it has also a mode where it can find similar or duplicate file names.

This tools has also a PRO version, but all you need is available in its FREE version too. Of course if you need to do fancy stuff like export to XML or add some special filters to the search you will have to go PRO. For all of the rest of us the FREE version works just fine as it can find 100% duplicate files and also search for similar or duplicate file names. The tools supports all Windows operating systems including the latest Windows 7 and Windows 8 versions.

Oh did I forget to mention that FDFF has an internal preview? A very neat feature that displays most of the common file formats including images, video, text files, binary files and many more. This makes it very easy to review the results and compare them right inside the application.

Do not forget to check also the disk analysis tool by the same company as it is also FREE.

Print Directory

GemTech Articles

Printing directory is something that everyone has needed now or then. This simple-looking task unfortunately turns to be a bit hard as there is no built-in support to do that in Windows.

I recently found this cool tool that can Print Directory tree easily.

There is a video tutorial on how to print directory her:

The main goal of this free tool is the disk cleanup task, and printing a directory is just a tiny feature from all the things it can do. With its Explore style interface you can start using the tool right away without the need of checking the documentation. The application can scan certain folders or entire hard drives and present the results sorted by size in a neat report. This makes it easy to determine the space hogs immediately. The distribution of disk space is also visualized with nice pie and bar charts that can be interactively used for navigation too.

I will focus on the options to print the contents of a folder here rather than discussing the many fancy features of Folder Size. So in short there is a Windows Explorer context menu “Scan with Folder Size” and all you have to do is to navigate to the folder that you want to print and use it. This will start the application which will scan the corresponding folder and list all the files and sub-folders of the selected item.

In order to print the results use the File->Print option. This will display the Print Preview dialog where you can choose multiple options. Folder Size prints to many formats including the proprietary PPV (Print Preview), PDF, EMF or multi-page TIFF, of course it will print to the printer too.

Download this FREE tool and save valuable disk space by organizing your files.

Printing directories is easy as pie with the help of the Folder Size application.
